Nagpur: Those fearful of the prick while giving a blood sample have a reason to smile. Three former IITians have developed a low-cost self-test kit which uses urine, instead of blood, to give key pathologicial investigations for diabetic health, kidney or liver functions, ketones, pH and hydration within a minute.
Validated by BMC’s Sion Hospital, the technology has been developed by IIT-Bombay alumni Nikunj Malpani, Anurag Meena and Pratik Lodha.
Meena was driven by his parents’ comorbid condition requiring frequent tests while Maplani had a health-tech background.
The trio set up a startup, ‘Neodocs’, in 2020. Since then, the test kits have gained popularity, said representatives of the startup which showcased the innovation at the 108th Indian Science Congress at Nagpur.
“The kit has a urine container. Test cards have to be dipped in it. The chemistries take 60 seconds to react. The user has to open the app to scan the colour-coded strip on the Neodocs app,” said Manasvi Shah, head of partnerships.
She added that within 30 seconds, one can track the entire health with the help of urine. “It’s an anytime and anywhere kit. The accuracy is measured in two ways – specificity and sensitivity. The kit has specificity of 99% and 96% sensitivity. Once the self test report is generated on the app, it can be shared with the treating doctor for an analysis,” she said.
The kit is available online, including retail chains and pharmacy portals. “We have partnered with many companies for women’s health and are working with doctors in Mumbai and Jaipur,” she said.
Malpani has a healthcare background and wanted to do something in health-tech. “He is a serial entrepreneur in health-tech. Meena did it out of concern for his parents and many like them,” she said.
All the three founders have different specializations while Pratik looks after the technology part.
