Updated : Jan 7, 2023, 20:30 IST

Nadira was considered the original Bollywood vamp and is prominently remembered for her song, ‘Mud mud ke na dekh, mud mud ke... ’ from 'Shree 420'. She was among the highest-paid actresses during her career, and was also one of the first Indian actresses to own a Rolls-Royce. Born into a staunch Jewish family, Nadira who had never seen more than two movies in her life was coincidentally spotted by Mrs Mehboob Khan and signed on for 'Aan' (1952) after Nargis, the original choice for the role, could not do the movie. 'Aan' (1952) had stalwarts like Dilip Kumar, Prem Nath and Nimmi in the star cast. According to the directions, Nadira had to glare at people to exhibit arrogance and raise her eyebrows throughout the film. Dilip Kumar once told Nadira: "You are the most despicable character I have ever met!" which created a long animosity in her for the legendary actor. For more news and updates stay tuned to Etimes.
