Car drivers are top traffic violators in Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: Figures from city traffic police suggested that citizens still do not understand the importance of traffic rules. In 2022, not wearing seatbelts and illegal parking were the most common violations. The data also shows that car drivers were among the worst violators.
According to city traffic police, of the 2.12 lakh traffic violations in 2022, as many as 80,312 were for not wearing seat belts. In these 80,312 cases, police collected fines totalling Rs 4.01 crore. Not wearing seat belt while driving a car or a six-wheeler was the most common of all violations, accounting for nearly 38% of all cases.

For not wearing a seatbelt, 79,800 car drivers were fined Rs 3.99 crore. The 512 six-wheeler drivers penalized included bus and truck drivers.
Illegal parking followed seat belt violations in occurrence. Car drivers topped the illegal parking category too, according to city traffic police data. Some 9,060 car drivers were fined Rs 45.53 lakh for not parking properly, accounting for more than half of the 17,089 illegal parking cases and the corresponding fines totalling Rs 85.71 lakh in 2022.
In the stop-line violation category too, car drivers were the top violators. There were 9,450 car drivers who paid Rs 47.55 lakh among the 15,395 violators who paid a total of Rs 77.60 lakh in fines for this violation in 2022.
Car drivers were also at the top in traffic signal violations in 2022. Of the 6,159 such cases with Rs 53 lakh in fines, there were 3,771 car drivers who paid Rs 34.34 lakh in 2022.
