Thiruvananthapuram: As the state capital is preparing to host the 13th national conference of All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) from Friday, the agraharam residents in Chalai joined in the celebrations on a colourful note.
On Thursday the women residents of the agraharam, along with AIDWA national vice-president PK Sreemathi, created 13 colourful rangolis to celebrate the curtain-raiser event.
“We never expected this much of a response from the women residents. As AIDWA is an association which works towards attaining equality for all women, we thought of collaborating with them for a small curtain-raiser event ahead of our conference. On Thursday morning, around 10 women from the Brahmin community living in Valiyasala participated in drawing 13 rangolis to represent AIDWA’s 13th national conference. They welcomed us wholeheartedly, and even invited us to their homes to enjoy hot cups of coffee served in the traditional bronze cups,” AIDWA state joint secretary, S Pushpalatha said.
According to Uma Ramasubraniam, a Valiyasala resident, the event was an example of celebrating womanhood. “Since the organisation stands for women's rights and equality, there was no question of thinking about other differences. We do not distinguish between communities or political affiliations when it comes to a
common cause. Even our elders were extremely happy to participate and interact with PK Sreemathi and other AIDWA members,” she said.
