Thane: A 36-year-old ragpicker died after a heavy metal plate fell on her from the Metro work near Vivianna mall in the wee hours of Thursday in Thane.
The deceased was identified as Sunita Kamble, a resident of Lokmanya Nagar pada number three. A police officer said the incident occurred around 7am near a pole of a Metro. “The deceased had got into the pit dug for the pillar to hold the girder, possibly to pick up plastic or metal. That’s when the metal sheet barricating the pole fell on her due to which she died on the spot,” said an officer from Rabodi police station. Some onlookers alerted the incident to the police and the regional disaster management cell of Thane municipal corporation, who went for the rescue operation but by the time they reached she was already dead, the officer added. Her body has been sent to the government hospital for autopsy, and a case of accidental death has been registered with the Rabodi police station. The metro work is underway along the eastern express highway and metal barricades have been put to prohibit anyone entering.
