Ranchi: Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), a fully owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has bagged a patent from the Government of India for developing “a system and method for controlling generation and movement of fugitive dust”. An innovation that can go a long way in controlling suspended particulate matter
pollution emanating from coal mining and processing activities.
Patent gives CMPDI the right to stop others from copying, manufacturing, selling, or importing their invention without permission, which eventually would have commercial value attached to it.
Fugitive dust is the particulate matter that is generated from various sources which are exposed to air and not discharged into the atmosphere through a confined flow stream (stack emissions).
While it is easy to control stack emissions, fugitive dust has been a cause for concern at various industrial sites, including mines, thermal power plants, railway siding, ports, construction sites and places where mined minerals — both coal and non-coal — are stored and handled in the open.
Under the innovative system, dust generation from open sources is reduced in situ which in turn reduces air pollution and improve ambient air quality. This system also provides noise attenuation which helps in improvement of the aesthetics of the site.
CMD of CMPDI, Manoj Kumar, and director, Shankar Nagachari, appreciated the team of CMPDI for effectively managing pollution and at the same time bagging a patent to bring dividends to the company with future use of the system in allied industries.
