RAJKOT: An auto carrying seven schoolchildren, aged between 7 and 10 years, was overturned by a raging bulls in Jetpur town of Rajkot district on Thursday afternoon.
The unfortunate vehicle got caught in the crosshairs of a massive bovine infighting on the road between two bulls. Thankfully, the children escaped with minor injuries only.
Eyewitnesses in Takudipara area of Jetpur town blame the bullfight in the middle of the crowded road for upsetting the auto ferrying the kids when it tried to skirt past the bovine melee from a corner. One of the bulls was pushed back during the fight which hit the auto with such an intensity that the auto driver lost balance of the vehicle and overturned. CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media soon after.
As the auto overturned, the frightened children trapped inside started to scream and the passers-by rushed to rescue them.
Chief officer of Jetpur municipality, Ashwin Gadhvi told TOI, “Fortunately, a few students received only minor injuries. We have already allotted a contract to impound stray cattle from January 1 and in past five days we have impounded around 45 stray cattle. After this incident, we will become more strict against cow menace on the public road.”
According to sources, there is no strict action against cow menace in state’s small towns and villages in which the civic bodies also lack funds and resources to rein in on the menace.
There is no tagging of animals in Jetpur, as a result of which the civic body does not have any knowledge about the ownership of stray cattle and cannot register a police complaint against the owners in case of grievous human injury or death by stray cattle.
