‘Remain vigilant to prevent substance abuse among kids’ in Karnataka
K Naganna Gowda, chief of Karnataka State Commission for Child Rights, chairs a meeting in Mangaluru on Thursday
MANGALURU: There is a growing concern about substance abuse among children, and the authorities have a duty to be vigilant and prevent it, said K Naganna Gowda, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Child Rights (KSCPCR).
Gowda chaired a meeting to discuss the progress related to RTE-2009, Pocso Act, and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, with various government departments related to it, here on Thursday.
“There are reports and incidents of growing alcohol and drug abuse among school-going children in the state. Therefore, the excise department must ensure that pubs and bars do not serve or sell alcohol to underage children. The sale of gutkha, cigarettes and other tobacco products to children is also prohibited. The departments must take harsh action against those who violate it,” Gowda said.
Gowda said there are complaints that medical shops are illegally selling contraceptives and stimulant drugs to minors. “All the above drugs, and any type of contraceptive should not be sold to minors. The district deputy commissioner must send a notice to all pharmacies, not to sell them, and keep an eye on those who do,” said Gowda.
