Coimbatore: Contract drivers with the civic body on Tuesday appealed corporation commissioner M Prathap and mayor Kalpana Anandakumar to increase their daily wages from the present ₹490. Their demand comes in the wake of the civic body hiking the daily wages of contract conservancy workers to ₹648 from ₹440.
The drivers approached the officials during the weekly grievance meeting at the main corporation building on the day.
“There are 490 drivers in total. Permanent drivers are engaged only for the vehicles of corporation commissioner and deputy corporation commissioner. Drivers for other vehicles are engaged on a contract basis,” one of them said.
In another instance, regular users of Puliakulam branch library petitioned the officials, seeking water facility at the library toilet. “The library that functions from 8am to 8pm is used by a large number of people who prepare for competitive exams. They face difficulty in the absence of running water in the toilet,” they said in the petition.
The civic body received a total of 46 petitions pertaining to various issues in its zones. Deputy mayor R Vetri Selvan and deputy corporation commissioner Dr M Sharmila were also present at the weekly grievance meeting.
