Another New Year horror: Student battles for life after Greater Noida hit-&-run
Sweety is on ventilator support at Kailash hospital
NOIDA: As details of the horror ride in which a 20-year-old woman was dragged several kilometres under a car on New Year night in Delhi keep emerging, another hit-and-run incident has come to light.
It has left a young woman battling for life in hospital.
Sweety Singh, a final-year BTech student of a private college in Greater Noida, is on ventilator support after sustaining critical head injuries. Sweety and two others, police said, were hit by a speeding Santro at Beta 2 in Greater Noida around 9pm on December 31, police said. Two flat mates who were with Sweety - Karsoni, a third-year BTech student, and Anganba, a third-year BCom student - sustained minor injuries and have been discharged from hospital.
The Santro is yet to be traced. Its driver has not been identified either. Shivam Singh, Sweety's friend who filed a police complaint the same night, told TOI Sweety was taken to hospital by her flat mates with help from some passersby. "I was on a call with Karsoni. We were talking about the semester fee submission date when I heard a scream. Immediately after that, the phone got disconnected."
Shivam called a friend and the two went to Beta 2 on a bike to find out what had happened since all three were not reachable on their phones. "We could eventually contact Karsoni when we reached their house in Alpha 2. She said they had met with an accident and were at the hospital. We rushed there and found Karsoni and Anganba being given first aid, but Sweety was bleeding profusely from her ear," Shivam said.
"Doctors later told us Sweety had brain injuries and needed immediate surgery. They operated on her on January 1 and then around 1pm on January 2. She regained consciousness but only for a minute," he added.
Shivam said a Santro that was going zig-zag on the road had ploughed into his three friends. "Karsoni and Anganba fell on bushes adjacent to the road but Sweety was thrown into the air and fell 5 metres away from the point of impact," he said.
The driver of a Baleno that was passing by stopped and helped take Sweety and the others to Kailash hospital. Dinesh Kumar Singh, additional DCP (Greater Noida) said an FIR was registered against an unknown person under sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC. "Three teams have been formed to nab the accused in the case. Police are checking CCTV footage to trace the accused," he said. The FIR was filed on January 1.
Dinesh Sharma, spokesperson for Kailash hospital in Greater Noida, said, "Surgery has been done successfully and we are confident that we will save her. But 24 hours are critical for her and we will talk about her health on Wednesday after a team of doctors assesses her."
