Malav Rajda, who has been a part of
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah since its inception, decided to quit the popular sitcom after a 14-year-long association. While there have been reports of Malav quitting the show over creative differences but in an exclusive interview with ETimes TV, the director dismissed these rumours. He also shared that it was a very difficult decision for him to make, but he went ahead with it as he wanted to venture out of his comfort zone.
"It has been a very difficult decision to take and it wasn’t an immediate one. It was a well-thought-about decision and I pondered over it for close to 6-8 months. I took the decision as I wanted to explore something new and do something more creative as a person. I wanted to go out, challenge myself, and explore the world and it took me 6 to 8 months to convince myself to quit the show because it is a very big show and a lot of emotions, and relations are involved. I have love and a personal bond with each and every one on the sets. I had become a little stagnant and saturated which is not good for my growth. I was not able to give my best. Once I made the decision I was very sure about it that this is the way ahead and this is what I want to do. It was for the betterment of the show. I also believe the only thing constant about life is change and in life there comes a point when you need change," he shared.
Dismissing the rumours of any friction with the production house and producer Asit Kumar Modi, Malav said, "I don’t know where these rumours of creative differences have come from. I am the same person, the production house is the same, it is not like somebody else has taken over the project. It is the same Neela Telefilms who were running the show in 2008 and are still the producers. And I have worked with the production house for 14 years, so I am really surprised by the rumours of creative differences. Obviously, it is an old association so even they were not really happy to let me go nor was I happy to part ways. But eventually, when Asit ji and I sat down and spoke, it was a mature discussion where we mutually decided to part ways."
Malav calls Asit Modi his elder brother and shares how difficult it was to move out, "Asit bhai is someone who doesn’t like his people going anywhere, he is attached to everyone like a family. Because we have been part of the show for a very long time. But he understood that I wanted to move out for my creative growth and I was doing this show for the last 14 years. When I spoke to him he understood my side and obviously he was not happy, but he allowed me to go. For me, he’s like my elder brother and I look up to him for advice and guidance. But when I explained to him he understood what I am looking to do in life."
The director, who has directed Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah for 14 years says that it is a risky decision and he is ready for failures, rejections, and humiliation if any, "I know this is a very risky decision that I have taken in life. I will be very honest that I also have my home loans to pay off and I know Taarak is a very big brand even after knowing all this I have taken a decision to move on because there is something in me that wants me to go out and challenge myself and explore. I don’t know what the future holds for me. I might pass or fail but unless I don’t venture out into the market and try I won’t know. As a creative person, I wanted to move out of my comfort zone. I am fine with failures, rejections, and humiliation because I know all these things are going to teach me to do better in life," he concluded.
