Chandigarh: A live bomb was found just about 2 km away from official residences of Punjab and Haryana chief ministers at a mango orchard in Sector 2 here on Monday, sparking panic and prompting police to cordon off the area.
Cops said a call was received at police control room at 2.58 pm from a tubewell operator working in the orchard that an unidentified object was lying in the fields on the Nayagaon-Kansal road, which is about 1km away from a helipad used by the two CMs.
A bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot and declared it to be a live bomb shell. The shell was placed in a drum and covered with sandbags. Army help was sought.
A senior official at the Western Command said, “The police sought help from us. The area is being guarded by cops right now. A team from the Western Command visited the spot and pointed out there is nothing to worry about. On Tuesday morning, another team of experts from the Army will visit the site.”
On the other hand, senior police officials said the Army would declare about what type of bomb it was, but the department has formed teams to find out how a live bomb shell reached a high-security zone. An investigation is under progress, they said.
Sources said discarded shells have been found in the past too.
On February 20, 2017, two bomb shells were found at Rajindra Park near the Punjab chief minister’s house in Sector 2.
