Patna: Four recently born tiger cubs at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as
Patna zoo, will soon be seen by the visitors there. The cubs are seven months old and have acclimatised to the surroundings of the zoo, an official said.
As per practice, newborn cubs of most wild animals at Patna zoo are kept away from public display for the first few weeks or months to make them acclimatise with the environment of the zoo and being around human beings. They remain with their mother under continuous monitoring with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and not even zoo staff are allowed to enter inside their enclosure.
Chief wildlife warden of Bihar, Prabhat Kumar Gupta, told TOI on Monday that the four tiger cubs will be released for public display in a few days. “It was initially planned to release them on January 1. However, it was postponed owing to a huge crowd on that occasion. Nevertheless, the cubs have acclimated to the environment at the zoo and will be released for public display in a few days,” he said.
The quadruplets -- two white and two yellow -- were born on May 25 last year to seven-year-old Sangita, who was paired with fellow yellow tiger Nakul. Sangita and Nakul were brought from Chennai zoo in 2019.
“The mother took very good care of the four cubs; as a result they are completely healthy and have adjusted to the environment at the zoo. They are being fed cattle flesh and have learnt to live in the territory of their mother,” said a forest officer.
The four tiger cubs were officially given names by chief minister
Nitish Kumar on the occasion of International Tiger Day on July 29 last year. “The cubs are most likely to be released in public display upon nod from forests, environment and climate change minister (Tej Pratap Yadav),” the official said.
There are a total of nine tigers at Patna zoo, including four adult females, one adult male and four cubs.
