CHENNAI: A 32-year-old woman, the daughter-in-law of DMK functionary Dravida Balu who was killed in 2013, was beaten to death by her relative in a family dispute at Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district on Sunday night. Three others of the family, who were injured in the violence, have been hospitalised.
Police named the accused as S Bhuvan Kumar alias Vishal, 22, an engineering graduate. He is the son of Sathiyavelu, Ellapuram panchayat union secretary. Sathiyavelu is the younger brother of Dravida Balu, who was killed by a six member gang which hurled crude bombs at him nine years ago.
A property dispute was brewing between the brothers' families. Dravida Balu's wife Selvi, 65, their son Murugan, 42, Murugan's wife Ramya, 32 and their son Karunanidhi, 15, lived at a house in Kannikapier near Periyapalayam.
At 10pm on Sunday, Bhuvan Kumar, who lives with his father in the same area, barged into the house and starting beating up the four of them with an iron rod.
They were severely injured, and Ramya succumbed to injuries. Hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to their help when Bhuvan Kumar fled the scene. Periyapalayam police sent Ramya's body for postmortem and arrested Bhuvan Kumar on charges of murder.tnn
