Surat: A 52-year-old man died when his throat got slit by a kite manja on Surat-Kamrej road on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Balvant Patel, a resident of Navagam colony.
Uttarayan is still 12 days away, but people have started flying kites. In December, three persons suffered severe neck injuries because of kite manja. All the incidents took place on
Sundays when people fly kites as Sunday is a holiday.
Patel was employed in a textile unit in Diamond Nagar in Laskana and was returning home on his motorcycle. He was near Sahakar Nagar in Kamrej when he suffered a deep cut due to a kite thread. He was shifted to Kamrej Community Health Centre (CHC) where he was declared dead.
“The cut was deep and clean. Due to the cut by the thread, he died. He had died before he was brought to the hospital,” said a doctor at the CHC.
The body was sent for postmortem on Monday morning. Preliminary findings revealed that Patel died of the kite thread injury and heavy blood loss. “The deceased died by kite thread and he suffered the injury while driving his motorcycle. We request people to inform us if anyone is selling or using Chinese threads for kite flying,” said an officer from Kamrej police station.
Police have urged people to use guards on two-wheelers. “In few cases, a normal thread other than Chinese thread can also cause severe injury to a person on a moving vehicle,” said police.
On December 11, Prakash Rathod (40) suffered severe injury while coming down from Jilani Bridge towards Ved Road on his motorcycle. On the same day, Arif Lokhandwala (45) suffered a kite manja injury in his neck and fingers when he was moving on Gotalawadi Flyover Bridge in Katargam.
On December 18, Babloo Vishwakarma suffered injury in his neck on Piyush Point Flyover Bridge. His family too suffered injuries when they all fell on the road after the thread injured Vishwakarma.
