Villagers in Karnataka oppose Kalasa project
Members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti of Khanapur organised a meeting on Monday
Keri: Villagers from Khanapur, Karnataka, and the vicinity who will be affected by the diversion of the Mhadei river are gearing up to oppose the Kalasa-Bhandura project of Karnataka.
On Monday, members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti of Khanapur organised a meeting at Shiv Smarak to discuss the implications of the project and tp plan a course of action.
Prakash Vithalrao Chavan, who presided over the meeting, said, “The proposal will have serious implications on the villages in the Mhadei basin. Without quenching the thirst of local villagers, initiatives are under way to divert water to other areas. Already destruction of forests has resulted in intensifying flooding during the monsoon and degrading water resources during the lean season.”
Yeshwant Birje, who attended the meeting, said, “We have resolved to constitute various sub-committees to express our apprehension at the village level.”
