Lowest crime cases recorded in city last year since 2018
Guwahati: Despite the sudden rise in crime in the city towards the end of 2022, the police on Monday claimed that the capital recorded the lowest crime rate last year since 2018.
According to the data provided by the police, the number of cases dropped by around 50% last year over the previous year and this negates the allegation that the police have failed to control crime.
Guwahati police commissioner Diganta Barah, while giving the facts and figures of the crimes that have taken place in the city since 2018 and the action taken to handle and prevent them, said, “There was an increase in crime cases in December. Crimes were reported frequently which raised the question of policing. But after analyzing the figures of the last five years since 2018, it has come to light that the year 2022 saw the lowest crimes.”
As per the data, the city recorded the highest crimes in 2019. “The police have been relentlessly working to control crime in the city and have been successful in many ways. They have been successful in their war against drugs and this has put a brake in the drugs supply and consumption chain. A total of 237 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act were registered last year, which is the highest since 2018,” he added.
Over 14% of the total cases reported last year combined burglary, robbery, kidnapping of women and domestic violence cases. The city saw around 18% rise in murder cases and over 3% in rape cases last year.
Talking about the measures to prevent and handle crimes, the CP said, “CCTVs have been installed at 20 traffic junctions on GS Road. But those cameras have no surveillance feature. These cameras are for traffic monitoring only. However, a project to install CCTVs for surveillance in the city is under consideration. This will help in preventing or handling crimes in the city.”
Apart from the new cases registered last year, a total of 34,530 cases are pending. The city has now over 27,000 cases pending as on Monday after the disposal of over 17,000 cases.
