Even cop’s home not safe from burglars
Coimbatore: Burglars broke into two locked houses at Kovaipudur and decamped with cash and gold ornaments in the early hours of Sunday.
L John Xavier, 46, of Kovaipudur, a constable attached to the Podanur police station, and his wife Esthar, a constable attached to the East all women police station, had rented out a portion of their house to Kabila Premkumar, a retired deputy superintendent of police, who was attached to the Tamil Nadu special police battalion.
The inmates had locked the houses and left for a church to attend New Year mass around 11pm on Saturday. “John and family returned around 3am on Sunday to find the front door lock broke open, and 38.75 sovereigns of gold jewellery and 9,000 kept in a steel bureau missing. As much as 27.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery and 75,000 were stolen from Kabila’s house,” a police officer said.
A team from the Kuniyamuthur police station inspected the place. Fingerprint bureau sub-inspectors recovered two foreign fingerprints.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that two ex-convicts were roaming in the locality on Saturday night, the officer added.
City police commissioner V Balakrishnan has formed three special teams to nab the burglars.
