Ludhiana: In a major development in the field of bicycle manufacturing, affixing of reflectors on bicycles has been made mandatory from January 1, 2023. Though large scale bicycle manufacturing units are already complying to these norms, there are hundreds of small scale units that were not doing so because of the cost factor. However, now they have no alternative as action will be taken on units, brand owners that fail to affix reflectors on bicycles being made or sold by them.
Giving more information, Charanjit Singh Vishivkarma, former president of United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association, said, “From January 1, 2023, it has become mandatory to affix reflectors on every new bicycle sold in the market. In case the manufacturer or seller fails to comply to this condition, he is liable to be penalised by imposing penalty and may also face imprisonment. There are hundreds of small manufacturers, assemblers and traders in Ludhiana, who sell bicycles under their brands and not all of them were complying to this requirement due to the cost factor, but now they will have to comply to the same.”
Vishivkarma added, “Though the government has formulated a plan for ensuring fixing of reflectors on every new bicycle from now onwards, but attention should also be paid to the fact that as on date there are lakhs of old bicycles on roads that do not have reflectors. Therefore, special camps should be organised in major roads of every city by the centre and state governments in which the old bicycles should be fitted with the reflectors free of cost.”
