Brain dead woman’s lungs airlifted
Mysuru: A family of a brain dead patient donated the patient’s lungs which were airlifted to Secunderabad from a Mysuru hospital on Monday. The deceased patient also gave life to six other patients.
Malathi SP, 61 years, was brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals in the city on December 31 from Nirmala Hospital after she suffered a serious head injury in a road accident near RMC yard on Nanjangud road. Her husband was riding the scooter while she was a pillion. Both were wearing helmets. However, Malathi’s helmet was not locked which resulted in a head injury when the scooter was hit, the hospital said on Monday.
Malathi was immediately rushed to Nirmala Hospital and later was shifted to Apollo BGS Hospitals. CT scan showed a brain stem infarct and she was shifted to ICU immediately for life support and intensive care. On Sunday her condition worsened and at 9.03pm, she was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure. Her family came forward to donate her organs, it stated.
On Monday morning Malathi’s organs (lungs, liver, 2 kidneys, heart valves and corneas) were harvested. The lungs were airlifted to KIMS, Secunderabad. A green corridor was created between Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru to Mysuru Airport located at Mandakalli for urgent lung transfer to Secunderabad.
Liver and left kidney were transplanted at Apollo BGS Hospital while the right kidney was transplanted at JSS Hospital in the city. Heart valves were sent to Manipal Hospital, HAL, Bengaluru. Corneas were sent to KR Hospital in the city.
N G Bharateesha Reddy, vice-president, Apollo BGS Hospitals, thanked Mysuru traffic police, airport staff and Karnataka State Industrial Security Force police for creating the green corridor to carry the harvested organ to be airlifted.
