Two held for killing man and dumping his body in car on Mumbai-Goa highway

Two persons were arrested by Navi Mumbai police from Dehu Road in Pune for allegedly killing a man last November and dumping his body in a car on the Mumbai-Goa highway, a senior crime branch officer said on Tuesday. The arrested accused are notorious criminals, he said, adding they fatally shot the victim as the latter had taken Rs 7 lakh from one of them under the pretext of selling gold at a cheaper price but failed to deliver. Mumbai reports 3 fresh Covid-19 cases, active case tally at 29

Mumbai on Tuesday reported three new COVID-19 cases, but no fresh death linked to the infection was recorded in the metropolis, the local civic body said. With this, the overall tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 11,55,133, while the death toll remained unchanged at 19,746, said a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin. (PTI)

Two held for gunning down labour contractor in Thane

Two persons were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the death of a labour contractor who was gunned down in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said. The victim Ganesh Duryodhan Kokate, 33, was shot dead by some persons when he was travelling in his car near Kasheli arch on December 8, 2022, deputy commissioner of police (Crime) Shivraj Patil said. Employees of three state-owned power companies to go on 72-hour strike from January 4

Unions of three state-owned power companies in Maharashtra have warned of a 72-hour strike from Wednesday to protest against privatisation of power companies, an official said on Tuesday. The strike has been called by Maharashtra Rajya Karmachari, Adhikari and Abhiyanta Sangharsh Samiti, an action committee of power company unions. (PTI)

Need to make India, world’s advance science lab in 75th yr of independence: PM

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on the scientific community to make India a laboratory of advanced science in its 75th year of independence.
  • Speaking at the inauguration of 108th Indian Science Congress on the premises of Nagpur University here, the PM said India was making rapid strides in all sectors and in the next 25 years, it would scale new heights.
  • “In science, when passion combines with the attitude of service to the nation, it leads to extraordinary results. The Indian scientific community would play a major role in taking Indian to a pole position, which it fittingly deserves. Observation is most important for scientists, who follow a pattern and reach a conclusion. In this time, data collection and analyzing it is important.”
  • Stressing that the 21st century belonged to India, Modi said the country had excess data and technology, which can take science to new heights. “Our traditional knowledge and scientific approach would help us in scientific discovery. We need to strengthen our scientific processes and also develop an attitude for it. As India is taking rapid strides in the field of science and technology, we are witnessing the results.”

Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Laxman Jagtap died at 59 on Tuesday, party sources said. Jagtap, the legislator from Chinchwad in Pune, was suffering from cancer and undergoing treatment since a long time, a family member said. He breathed his last at a private hospital here, sources said.

HC: Can’t develop Mahim park until DP shows it as reserved

The Bombay high court on Monday said that so long as Mahim Nature Park (MNP) is reserved in the development plan (DP) of Mumbai, it cannot be developed for any other purpose. “So long as the DP shows it as nature park, no other activity can be carried out on it,” Justices Sanjay Gangapurwala and Sandeep Marne said, disposing of a PIL filed by NGO Vanashakti and activist Zoru Bhathena seeking to ensure the park, a protected forest, was not covered under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP). The PIL said the park was a hub forbio-diversity and boasted of a variety of flora and fauna.

  • Traffic police issued restrictions at south Mumbai for Tuesday as an India vs Sri Lanka T20 cricket match is going to be played at Wankhede Stadium.
  • Parking restrictions (from 3pm-11. 45pm): D Road, C Road, F Road, F Cross Road; E Road from its junction on D Road up to its junction on C Road; On NS Road from Princess Street flyover to Sundar Mahal Junction (South-bound and Northbound).
  • Changes in routine traffic pattern (from 3pm-11. 45 pm): DRoad shall be one-way from West to East; C Road shall be one-way from East to West; E Road shall be one-way (southbound) for all vehicles from its junction on D Road up to its junction on C Road.
