Constable, LRD suspended for their unruly behaviour
Surat: Two cops were suspended on Monday for allegedly assaulting a man on the night of December 30.
Deputy commissioner of police, zone II, Bhagirath Gadhvi suspended constable Piyush Chaudhary and lok rakshak dal jawan Ashok Chaudhary after a preliminary inquiry into the incident found the two cops guilty of beating up a man in Udhna area of Surat. Surat police commissioner Ajay Tomar had ordered an inquiry after a video showing the two cops in uniform allegedly dragging a man, punching and kicking him, went viral on social media. “The cops were suspended for their alleged unruly behaviour. The exact details will be known after completion of the inquiry,” said a senior police officer.
It was initially alleged that two cops had forced the man, who is yet to file a formal police complaint, to withdraw Rs 5,000 from an ATM and hand it over to the accused.
“The cops have denied taking any money. The man who is seen being dragged in the video and one other person present there are being questioned,” said a police officer.
The incident occurred when the two cops were on patrolling duty in a police control room (PCR) van on the night of December 30. They spotted the two men in an autorickshaw in Udhna and went to question them. The duo tried to run away. But one of them got caught.
“While the other man was nabbed after a chase. The cops tried to bring him to the PCR van but he did not cooperate. However, nothing illegal was found on them and they were allowed to go,” said a police officer.
“The two constables did not report the incident to the police control room or any police station. They should have done that. Why they did not report the incident is being investigated,” said a senior police officer.
