VADODARA: The Shrimati B K Shah Medical Institute and Research Centre of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth on Monday suspended three senior students in connection with a complaint of ragging registered against them by a first-year resident doctor.
Based on a report submitted by the anti-ragging committee, three resident doctors - Dr Hardik Nayak, Dr Kshemankar Shah and Dr Gaurav Vadodaria - were suspended from their duties.
While Nayak is a third-year student, Shah and Vadodaria are second-year students. The action against the trio, all from the department of orthopaedics, was initiated after the father of a first-year student from Jamnagar approached the varsity's anti-ragging committee with a complaint.
The student had taken admission in MS (orthopaedics) programme at Sumandeep Vidyapeeth. But according to his father his health started deteriorating owing to harassment by his seniors.
"He was forced to work for 20-22 hours a day. He was not allowed to go to his hostel room to take a bath. He was given enough time to finish his meals or other daily routines. The seniors used to extort money from him," the complainant's father told media persons on Monday.
He was called by the anti-ragging committee to register his statement, where he alleged that the head of the department (HoD) was indirectly responsible for the harassment caused to his son.
"After I had made an oral representation before the medical superintendent, the HoD started misbehaving and insulting my son. He stressed that my son needs to follow instructions/ directives given by his seniors. He even asked seniors not to help or guide my son if he does not comply. Apart from the senior students, I believe the HoD was equally responsible for ragging of my son," he alleged.
The student had called his parents as he feared that the seniors were planning to beat him up. He had even said in his complaint that the seniors were not speaking to him nor giving him any work.
