KANPUR: Police teams including traffic cops are keeping tight vigil in city streets with all kinds of security gadgets to ensure that people welcome New Year 2023 safely and responsibly. Commissioner of Police (CP) BP Jogdand held a meeting with senior police officials including over security arrangements across the city. “An extensive plan has been made to exercise vigilance at every intersection of the city from tonight itself. Those found to be involved in anarchy will be monitored by CCTV cameras installed at all intersections, and will be dealt with an iron hand,” said CP.
The Commissioner of Police said that all the DCPs, ACPs and station in-charges have been instructed to remain on alert mode regarding the New Year celebrations. “Local police and PAC will be ready to monitor and maintain law and order. Dial 112 vehicles, foot patrolling of the police and the force of the concerned police stations will do their duty with strict vigil,” said CP further.
The city has been divided into sectors and a team of SWAT have been kept on the standby mode. Of the many measures police adopted to avoid any untoward incident was a special drive against rash and drunken driving with several teams deployed with breath analysers and speedometers in different parts of the city. “There were barricades raised to check rash and drunken driving,” said a police official.
During the past few years the city has witnessed bloody brawls and serious accidents during New Year revelries. “To check such troublemakers and driving under the influence, the cops were deployed to initiate tough action against them,” said the official further. At the same time, amidst the concern of another wave of Covid, the district administration is also claiming to be prepared.
According to District Magistrate Vishak G Iyer, the monitoring committee has been activated with regard to Covid through all staff officers, DPRO and Municipal Commissioner. “We are following the instructions received from the government. At the same time, the magistrates and the police officers are coordinating together for the New Year celebrations. Along with this, arrangements are being made for a bonfire and blankets in view of the cold sweeping the region,” said DM further.
