CHENNAI: After the northeast monsoon season ended with 14% above normal rainfall in the city, expect January 2023 to begin with cool days and warm nights.
IMD has forecast below normal maximum temperatures and above normal minimum temperatures for January 2023. Private forecasters said cold northerly winds may move in and both day and night temperatures may begin to drop in the next three to four days.
In the monthly outlook for temperature during January 2023, IMD said, "Above normal to normal minimum temperatures are most likely over southern parts of the south peninsula. The probability forecast for the maximum temperatures indicates that below-normal maximum temperatures are likely over many parts of Central and peninsular India."
For the next 48 hours, skies are likely to be partly cloudy in the city and the suburbs. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31-32°C and 23°C.
The average temperatures in the day are one of the lowest in January when day temperatures are around 29.3°C and night temperatures touch 21.2°C.
Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather said cold northerly winds may begin to move over Tamil Nadu in the coming days and both day and night temperatures may begin to drop. "We can expect a marginal drop in both day and night temperatures for the next three to four days. The days may be clear and there may be sunshine, while there may be overnight cooling of the land," he said.
He also said northeast has almost withdrawn and weather systems may form only south of Bay of Bengal near equatorial Indian Ocean which may not have any effect on Tamil Nadu or Chennai.
The October to December season ended with 924.6mm rainfall, which is 14% above normal and Tamil Nadu registered 444.8mm which is one percent above normal.
