Russia-Ukraine War Live Updates: Overnight strikes on Kyiv cause power, heating outages

Debris from a destroyed drone over Kyiv early on Monday hit the capital's northeastern district, wounding one, the city's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Russia kept pounding Kyiv for a second night in a row, after firing a barrage of missiles over the capital on New Year's Eve night and earlier in the day.

An alert was in effect for Kyiv on Monday after an "air attack", the regional military administration announced on Telegram, with the city's mayor citing explosions in one district.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said: "All emergency services are on their way."

"We believe this is not an era of war. From the beginning, our effort has been to return to dialogue & diplomacy. We're on the side of peace & a large part of the world thinks like us."

Ukraine's unity and sense of purpose contrast sharply with the fear that prevails throughout Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday. "The feeling we all have of unity, of authenticity, of life itself, contrasts sharply with the fear that prevails in Russia," Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address. "They are afraid. You can feel it. And they are right to be afraid. Because they will lose. Drones, missiles, everything else will not help them. Because we stand united. They are united only by fear."

Moscow said on Sunday its New Year attacks on Ukraine targeted the pro-Western country's drone production, claiming it had managed to scupper Kyiv's "terror attacks" against Russia. Russia's defence ministry said a strike hit "the facilities of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine" which is involved in the production of drones.

In the war-torn Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, the chief of a small group of firefighters lines up his small team in front of the national flag, and wishes them a happy new year. For the nine stationed permanently in the city centre fire station, it has been a year of war and fire. They are posted in the eastern region of Donetsk where Bakhmut has become the epicentre of fighting.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that his only wish for all Ukrainians for 2023 was victory and resolved to stay the course while the country fights for it. "I want to wish all of us one thing - victory. And that's the main thing. One wish for all Ukrainians," Zelenskyy, dressed in his trademark khaki outfit, said in a video message a few minutes before midnight.

The attacks came minutes after Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy New Year message of wishes of victory for his country in the war that is in its 11th month, with no end in sight.

Numerous blasts were heard in Kyiv and in other places around Ukraine and air raid sirens wailed across the country in the first couple hours after midnight on New Year's Day. As the sirens wailed, some people in Kyiv shouted from their balconies, "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to heroes!" Reuters witnesses reported. Fragments from a missile destroyed by Ukrainian air defence systems damaged a car in the capital's centre, but preliminarily there were no wounded or casualties, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
