    Haryana News Live: Sexual harassment allegations levelled against Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh, Chandigarh Police register case

    Haryana News Live: Chandigarh Police on Saturday said they are investigating allegations of rape attempt levelled by an athletics coach against Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh, a former Olympian.

    Former captain of the Indian national hockey team, Sandeep Singh has rubbished the charges as "politically motivated".

    The woman, who participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics, was recruited as a junior coach in the Sports Department in September.

    In her complaint, she alleged Sandeep Singh sent her messages on Instagram and Snapchat.

    "On July 1, he made a Snapchat call and asked me to visit his residence in Sector 7, Chandigarh, for verification of documents. Around 6.50 p.m, he called me to his office and molested me. My T-shirt was torn. I managed to push him aside and ran out of the room as the door was unlocked," she alleged.

    Chandigarh Police spokesperson Ram Gopal said, "We have received the complaint and sent it to the Sector 26 police station."

    Delhi enjoyed 'good air' for 1,096 hrs in 2022

    The air quality in Delhi remained in the 'good' category for 1,096 hours in 2022, as against 827 hours in 2021, according to the India Meteorological Department.

    In the calendar year 2022, the particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) remained in the 'severe' category for 204 hours which is about 2.3 per cent of total time, as compared with 628 hours, which is 7.2 per cent of total time, in 2021.

    Rajasthan: Five killed in car-truck collision in Hanumangarh

    Five people were killed and another injured after a car collided with a truck carrying bricks in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district, police said on Sunday.

    The accident occurred late Saturday night near Bisrasar village on the Rawatsar-Sardarshahar highway.

    "Three people died on the spot and two others at a local hospital. The injured person was referred to Bikaner for treatment," Pallu Station House Officer Gopi Ram said.

    He said the truck was going towards Sardarshahar from Pallu, and the car came on to the highway from Bisrasar village, causing the accident.

    MG Motor India December sales up 53% to 3,899 units

    MG Motor India on Sunday reported a 53 per cent rise in retail sales at 3,899 units in December 2022.

    The company had sold 2,550 units in the same month in 2021.

    The twin challenges of the pandemic and logistical headwinds have had an impact on production, but the coming month could see an improvement across many of these parameters, the company said in a statement.

    "Tesla told workers not to discuss pay, working conditions"

    Elon Musk-run Tesla has been accused of violating labour laws in the US, allegedly directing employees not to talk about pay and working conditions.

    In a complaint, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) claimed that the electric car-maker "told employees not to complain to higher level managers about their pay or other conditions of employment" and said "not to discuss their pay with other persons".

    The company also allegedly told employees not to discuss the hiring, suspension, or termination of employees with others.

    These incidents occurred from December 2021 to January 2022, the complaint alleged.

    A judge will hear the arguments laid out by the complaint during a hearing in February.

    Prabodh Saxena appointed Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary

    The Sukhvinder Sukhu government in Himachal Pradesh has appointed 1990 batch IAS and Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Prabodh Saxena as the new Chief Secretary of the state.

    Orders in this regard were issued at 11.15 pm on December 31.

    The Sukhu Government has made a number of changes in the administrative ranks starting with Chief Secretary RD Dhiman.

    Dhiman has been shunted out and Saxena, an IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary, according to official notification.

    FPI inflow continues in December; equities corner Rs 11,119 crore foreign investment

    Foreign investors pumped in Rs 11,119 crore in the Indian equities in December, making it the second consecutive monthly inflow, despite increasing concerns over the re-emergence of Covid-19 cases in some parts of the world.

    However, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned cautious in recent days.

    The inflow in December was much lower compared to Rs 36,239 crore invested by FPIs in the month of November, data with the depositories showed.

    "Despite correction in the markets, increasing concerns over re-emergence of Covid in some parts of the world and recession worries in the US. FPIs remained net buyers in the Indian equity markets (in December)," Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director - Manager Research, Morningstar India, said.

    Minimum temperature drops to 5.5 deg Celsius in Delhi

    The minimum temperature in the national capital on Sunday dipped to 5.5 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

    The minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 10.7 and 10.2 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday.

    A drop in visibility too was recorded in several parts of the country.

    2023 will be ‘critical year', plan to turn around the economy, says Sri Lanka President

    Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Sunday said 2023 will be a “critical year” for the cash-strapped country, as his regime desperately scrambles to inject much-needed impetus to galvanise the beleaguered economy.

    Sri Lanka was hit by an unprecedented financial crisis in 2022 due to a severe paucity in foreign exchange reserves that also sparked political turmoil in the island nation that led to the ouster of the all-powerful Rajapaksa family. “We are looking at the New Year 2023 after having undergone the bleakest of times, immense hardships, as well as the uncertainties and hopelessness of the last year,” Wickremesinghe said in his New Year's message, as Sri Lanka turns 75 as an independent nation later this year.

    “I understand the great burdens that are placed on all of us and the setbacks that a majority of us have suffered due to the country's abject economic collapse,” he said.

    Two killed, six rescued in Delhi care home fire in Greater Kailash-II

    Two persons were killed in a massive blaze that broke out at a senior citizen care home in the Greater Kailash-II area of New Delhi early Sunday, fire officials said.

    According to the officials, both victims were already dead when the fire was extinguished and six people evacuated safely from the E Block building.

    As per the officials, a call about the fire was received around 5.15 am, and four fire tenders were immediately deployed to douse the flames.

    Yogi government recommends CBI probe against CSJMU vice-chancellor

    The Uttar Pradesh government has recommended a CBI probe against Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur, vice-chancellor Vinay Pathak.

    Thousands gather in China's Wuhan to celebrate New Year amidst covid wave

    Amid China's Covid wave, thousands of people gathered in Wuhan on Saturday night to celebrate the New Year after the authorities rolled back its stringent "zero-Covid" policy, Reuters reported.

    In this new year celebration, Civilians released balloons into the sky when the clock struck 12, as per the tradition in Wuhan, where the Covid story has begun.

    China accuses U.S. of distorting facts after aircraft clash

    A U.S. military plane involved in a confrontation with Chinese aircraft in disputed southern waters last week had violated international law and put the safety of Chinese pilots at risk, a defence ministry spokesman said.

    The U.S. military said on Thursday that a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter jet had come within 10 feet (3 metres) of a U.S. air force RC-135 aircraft on Dec 21, forcing it to take evasive manoeuvres to avoid a collision.

    But Tian Junli, spokesman for China's Southern Theatre Command, said in a statement late on Saturday that the United States had misled the public about the incident near the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.

    Canada to require COVID tests for passengers from China

    Canada plans to temporarily require people flying from China, Hong Kong and Macao to test negative for COVID-19 before leaving for Canada.

    The requirement will apply to all air travellers aged two and older from the three countries and will begin on Jan. 5, the federal government said in a news release Saturday.

    “These planned health measures will apply to air travellers, regardless of nationality and vaccination status,” the release said. “They are temporary measures, in place for 30 days, that will be reassessed as more data and evidence becomes available.”

    Croatia enters eurozone, Schengen area

    Croatia entered the eurozone and the EU border-free Schengen area on New Year's Day.

    This was the first time a European country joined both the eurozone and the Schengen area on the same day, an important milestone for Croatia, an EU member since 2013, Xinhua news agency reported.

    On January 1, Croatia became the 20th member of the eurozone and the euro becomes its official currency. On the same date, it also became the 27th member of the Schengen area, which was created in 1985 to allow free movement for all 420 million nationals of the signatory countries.

    Kim to increase nuclear warhead production 'exponentially'

    North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to increase the production of nuclear warheads “exponentially."

    State media reported Sunday that Kim called for drastically boosting the country's military power to protect its national interests as the U.S. and its allies apply more military pressures on North Korea.

    The official Korean Central News Agency cites Kim as saying North Korea is compelled to boost the production of nuclear warheads “exponentially” to mass-produce tactical nuclear weapons.

    It says Kim has also ordered the manufacturing of a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile with a swift, retaliatory attack capability. Kim also reportedly said North Korea will launch its first military spy satellite in the near future.

    Kim made the comments during a ruling party meeting.

    Four terrorists killed by Pak Army in military operation in north Waziristan

    Pakistani security forces on Saturday gunned down four terrorists associated with a banned outfit during a military operation in the country's restive northwestern region, according to an official statement.

    The military operation was conducted in Janikhel area of Bannu district bordering north Waziristan following a tipoff received by the security forces about the movement of the terrorists.

    UP ATS arrests one on suspicion of radicalising youth

    The Uttar Pradesh ATS has arrested one person suspected of radicalising youths for terror activities, it said in a statement on Saturday.

    The Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Saharanpur native Azharuddin on December 30. The arrest was based on the disclosure of Lukmaan, who was nabbed earlier for allegedly having links with the al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent and the Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, it said.

    Azharuddin allegedly showed "jehadi videos and literature" to youths in a bid to radicalise them and was working actively to make them join with the ideology of the terror organisations.

    Cops register cross FIRs after BJP alleges assault on Thane functionary

    Police registered cross complaints on Saturday in connection with the attack on a local BJP functionary allegedly by workers of the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena (BSS) faction in Thane city of Maharashtra.

    At least ten persons, including two former corporators of the BSS faction of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, have been named in a First Information Report (FIR), a police official said.

    Prashant Jadhav (42), the Wagle mandal general secretary, was attacked on December 30 when he was putting up a banner on his birthday. He is currently undergoing treatment at JJ Hospital in Mumbai. His father was also attacked, as per the FIR.

    North Korea opens New Year with missile launch

    North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile toward its eastern waters Sunday, entering 2023 with another weapons test after a record number of missile firings last year.

    South Korea's military detected the launch from the North's capital region around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. It said the missile travelled about 400 kilometers (250 miles) before falling into the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
