Ludhiana: Another potential year is gone for the city residents to witness some better public transport system in this industrial town. Though the residents kept waiting for a Metro or Bus Rapid Transport System, but they did not even get a proper city bus service on several routes.
The much hyped project prepared for the industrial town was Metro rail project and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had proposed metro at two corridors in 2008. The detailed project report got the approval in 2012 with a cost of Rs 10, 330 crores but the project was dumped in 2014. Another proposal came in 2014 to set up bus rapid transport system (BRTS) and MC general house too gave consent for the same.
However, both the projects were dumped for reasons best known to authorities. Moreover, the agreement between the civic body and Ludhiana City Bus Service Limited is coming to end in January 2024 but neither of the two are willing to do anything for expansion of service.
