Panaji: With the highway expanded up to Guirim on the northern side and from the Atal Setu onwards on the southern side, around seven kilometres of the stretch in between at Porvorim has proven to be a major bottleneck. Traffic congestion of nightmarish proportions is being experienced during the year-end peak tourist season here.
PWD minister Nilesh Cabral said that work of widening the existing road on this stretch has already begun as a measure to ease the traffic flow.
As operations at the Manohar International Airport are set to begin from this week, commuters fear that the traffic jams at Porvorim could only worsen and prove a hurdle for travellers in making it on time to the airport at Mopa.
“You will see that we have started work of widening the existing road at Porvorim already wherever land is available. Work on the flyover will begin soon,” said Cabral. He had earlier said that encroachments have cropped up on the land acquired for the highway widening work at Porvorim and work of demolishing these will start now.
The existing road is being widened in Porvorim in preparation, as construction work on the elevated highway here is scheduled to begin.
Once the construction work begins, it is expected to be on for around three to four years, which is set to add to Porvorim’s traffic woes like never before during this period.
