Thiruvananthapuram: An Assam native, who came to Kerala for New Year celebrations with family and friends, drowned at sea in Varkala on Saturday morning.
Aroop Dey, 33, was working in the IT sector in Bengaluru and had reached Varkala from Bengaluru on Thursday with his wife, friends and friends’ family members.
The 11-member gang was staying at a resort near Odayam beach. By 9.30am on Saturday morning, the gang went to the beach to take bath and Aroop went missing in the waves. He was soon rescued from the sea by fishermen in the area and rushed to Varkala taluk hospital. However, his life could not be saved. Aroop drowned 50 metres away from the beach.
The body of Aroop is kept at Parippally medical college hospital mortuary after postmortem. Police said the gang will leave for Assam with the body on Sunday. Ayiroor police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC for unnatural death.
