CHENNAI: Electricity minister V Senthil Balaji on Saturday said consumers can link their Aadhaar with the respective service connection till January 31.
While there are 2.3 crore domestic consumers and about 32 lakh agri service connections, that need to be linked with Aadhaar, as per the GO issued recently, only 1.6 crore consumers had linked their Aadhaar till Saturday afternoon.
"So far, 60.8% of consumers have successfully linked Aadhaar -87.9 lakh consumers at the special camps and 74.6 lakh online," said the minister.
To facilitate the process for the remaining consumers, including hut dwellers and agri connections who get free power, time to link Aadhaar has been extended till January 31. Earlier, the minister had announced special camps at section offices to link Aadhaar will end on December 31.
Also, to speed up the process, the minister has announced mobile camps in all 2,811 section offices. "Apart from the special counters at section offices, the mobile camps will visit all the streets in its jurisdiction to make it easier for consumer to link their Aadhaar. The drive will start from Monday," said the minister. "Do not expect further extension and make use of the opportunity to link Aadhaar," added the minister. He said Kanniyakumari district is on top to link Aadhaar with 73% of the consumers having completed the process, while Krishnagiri is tailing the list with about 50% of the consumers yet to link Aadhaar.
The minister said the staf at section offices have been instructed to facilitate name transfer of service connections within 48 hours. About linking Aadhaar with disputed properties, he said those connections are very few, a decision will be taken on such issues after the present drive is over.
