Hubballi: Hundreds of women gathered at Chennamma Circle here on Saturday with empty pots condemning irregular water supply in the city.
In the protest organised by the Vidyanagar block Congress, they shouted slogans against the authorities and demanded that water supply be streamlined in the city. “As the authorities are releasing water once every 8-10 days, it has been difficult to meet daily needs. This has hit poor and middle class families. One of our family members is forced to quit their job or business to wait for water,” they added.
Showing empty pots, the protesters said school-going children are forced to quit school as in many lower middle class families they have to wait for water and store it for daily needs.
Vidyanagar block Congress president Rajat Ullagaddimath said the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, the water board, KUIDFC and other concerned authorities are playing hide and seek with citizens. “When the situation is like this in the winter season, one can imagine the worst in summer,” he added.
Former mayor Prakash Kyarakatti said elected representatives of the BJP are busy releasing fake documents on Kalasa-Banduri project but have neglected water supply in the twin cities. “Former CM Jagadish Shettar has expressed his anger over the issue recently and said things can get worse during winter,” Kyarakatti said.
Leaders like Peeraji Khandekar, Huvappa Dayagodi, Arif Bhadrapur, Sandil Kumar, Sadiq Yekkundi and others were part of the protest.
