Panaji: Director general of police, Jaspal Singh, on Saturday appealed to people to follow the lane system while driving or riding, to avoid parking their vehicles in an obstructive way and to avoid drunken driving to ensure safe celebrations during the New Year revelry.
A central monitoring and command system was set up by the police connecting 500 personnel of the police, traffic police and fire and emergency services to ensure security and safety during the celebrations. North Goa beach belt sees visitors flocking there by the thousands to celebrate New Year.
“We have launched a special operation. We have set up a centralised monitoring and command system, with which we can monitor all our staff on the field. Apart from police, fire and emergency services and traffic police are also part of the system. We can use the system to monitor and also to record any incidents. It helps us deploy to staff to areas where they are needed,” said North Goa SP Nidhin Valsan.
Singh said that though the police have taken all precautions, the public should also behave responsibly. “We have been planning for some time to ensure that the New Year’s Eve passes off peacefully. Extra staff has been mobilised from all other units and a central pool has been created, so that non-essential units can contribute to the pool and both SPs have been given powers to ensure that there is adequate deployment in the high footfall areas, especially in the coastal areas of North and South district,” said Singh.
Anti-terrorist squad as well as two teams to check on unattended packages were also deployed.
“People should follow the lane system and nobody should park their vehicles in an obstructive way,” Singh said.
