Wild elephant rescued after being tranquillised
Mysuru: Forest department officials have rescued a tusker among two elephants that were wreaking havoc in the regions of Arabithittu Wildlife Sanctuary near Hunsur on Saturday.
The elephant was tranquillised and rescued.
The operation to rescue another continues. As the elephants had been posing threat to ‘Rare Materials Plant’, India’s only uranium enrichment plant, the forest department issued an order to rescue the elephants and shift them to the reserved forest.
Malathi Priya M, the chief conservator of forests, Mysuru circle, confirmed to STOI that one elephant was tranquillised and rescued and the operation to rescue another will continue.
The defence research and development organization (DRDO) had complained about a looming elephant threat for two weeks.
Even the public complained about the elephants that were causing trouble and damaging crops. The elephants earlier raided crops in KR Nagar and Hunsur regions for a month. Two weeks ago they were driven to Arabbithittu, but continued to cause trouble for the public.
Hence a decision was taken and one elephant was rescued. They are likely to be relocated to Nagarahole forest, the officer stated.
In an attempt to escape the forest, elephants damaged the fences of the Arabithittu sanctuary.
For two weeks, they have been straying into neighbouring villages often and returning to the forest.
