173 drink-driving & 147 helmetless riding cases in past 3 days in Kolkata

KOLKATA: Drink and dangerous driving cases post 9pm were more than double that of cases of not wearing a helmet or triple riding in the run up to the New Year, Kolkata traffic police said, quoting raid figures for the past three days.
Between December 28 and December 30, the city reportedly witnessed 173 cases of drink-driving and 196 cases of dangerous driving as compared to 147 cases of helmetless riding and 89 cases of triple riding. The huge rise in drunk and dangerous driving led Kolkata Traffic Police to take multiple steps this festive weekend to cut down on possible accidents, the cops focusing on three key aspects - drink and dangerous driving, speeding and helmetless riding.
Throughout Friday and Saturday night - that happens to be New Year's Eve - the cops set up 97 different teams which tried to counter speeding across the city. Nakas set up in a zig-zag manner forced motorists to slow down.
The night before New Year's Eve, the cops launched their crackdown at 50 locations between 9pm and 1am that led to 220 prosecutions. These special raids through nakas saw cops slap 58 cases of drink driving and 62 for dangerous driving.
Kasba and Jadavpur connectors emerged as major challenges for cops, besides the Jorabagan area. In comparison, only three drink driving cases were reported from Park Street. Some 24 persons were prosecuted at Rabindra Sarani-BK Pal Avenue, 10 of which were linked to drink driving. CIT Road-Padmapukur crossing saw nine prosecutions and JL Sarani and SN Roy Road Crossing saw eight.
On New Year's Eve, around eight cases were reported till 4pm. Till 8pm, most incidents of disorderly conduct were reported from pockets of south Kolkata and the Behala-Joka belt.
