Congress party to complain against MCC obtaining loan
Mangaluru: The Congress will write to the urban development department against Mangaluru City Corporation’s (MCC) plans of borrowing Rs 27.3 crore from the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) for minor development works.
Opposition leader in MCC council Naveen D’Souza told reporters here on Saturday that the Congress will file a complaint with the chief minister, minister of urban development department and secretary of the department.
Need for loan
questioned
“Why does the city corporation require loans for small works such as building retaining walls, constructing storm water drains, for taking up minor road works, including asphalting short stretches of roads? We will not oppose if the MCC avail loans for major projects to be taken up in the city. The city corporation has not received approval from the government to avail the loan. Hence, we will appeal to the government not to approve it,” D’Souza said.
A meeting of the corporators should have been convened by the mayor before deciding to seek a loan from the KUIDFC, he said.
“The mayor should have convened a meeting of the opposition leaders before including an agenda of council meeting. An action plan prepared for the works to be taken up through the KUIDFC loan was prepared by the MLAs. The mayor did not take corporators from the opposition into confidence before preparing the agenda. We will take the issue to the people by holding protests against the MCC,” the Congress leader said.
Former mayor and corporator Shashidhar Hegde said the MLAs should get special grants from the government for carrying out development works in the city rather than using the MCC grants.
