Made in Colvale jail, chapatis to be sold to govt hospitals in new year
Panaji: Chapatis prepared by the convicts serving time and under rehabilitation in Colvale jail may soon be available at hospitals in the state. The prison authorities are contemplating putting to good use a chapati maker by selling chapatis to hospitals and offices in Goa, in the new year.
“We are hoping to come up with a concrete plan for the roti maker. We are trying to work out a proper proposition so that it is useful to put it up. In the new year, we are hopeful that we will start something. As of now, we are still devising a plan,” inspector general of prisons Bosco George said.
The prison recently received a chapati maker as a Christmas gift by a local organisation to help with the tedious preparation of the flatbread. With the machine being able to produce 1,000 chapatis in an hour, the chapatis are therefore not only sufficient for the 700-odd inmates of the prison, but can also be used to generate income for the prisoners.
“The Colvale Jail has hundreds of prisoners which made us understand that their breakfast preparation was having some issues. Ever since we have donated the chapati maker, the prison has been getting 1,000 chapatis ready per hour,” the donor of the machine said on the condition of anonymity.
“I fully support the idea of the prisoners using this machine to supply chapatis to various government hospitals and offices. Life in a prison or shelter home is usually restricted to confinement. If these prisoners are given something to look forward to everyday, then their motivation levels, approach to life and feelings that they are a part of this society will make a huge impact on their life when they go back to the world,” the donor said.
