LUDHIANA: A major fire incident was reported in Sandeep Textile situated in one of the most congested markets of city's Mochpura Bazaar on Friday morning. The incident occurred between 7am to 7.30am.
After locals noticed the flames coming out of the multi-storey building and raised an alarm, the fire brigade was informed.
The fire had spread in the basement, first floor, second and some parts of the third floor, too. It took more than four hours to bring the fire under control. More than 40 fire tenders were engaged in the fire fighting operations.
According to people, the fire broke out due to a short circuit as there are several dangling wires around and this could have proved a major tragedy if it had spread to other buildings. The entire market has huge stock of hosiery goods and it could have resulted in a major mishap.
The fire station officer Maninder Singh said, "The fire was a major one but we controlled it in time and saved some portion of the building from fire."
He said the exact reason is not known for fire but people claimed that the incident happened due to a short circuit.
