Thane: The Central Railway is constructing an elevated multi-tiered deck above the Thane railway station in a bid to ease congestion at the arterial station platforms and its precincts, officials informed on Wednesday. The plan is part of the Thane station and periphery revamp being jointly executed by the Thane corporation and the railways.
The development was shared by the Thane corporation Wednesday following a detailed discussion between municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar and authorities from the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) recently over streamlining the congestion at Thane that is one of the densest stations on the Mumbai suburban network with a rough daily footfall of around 6.5 lakh.
As per plans, the railways plan will construct a two-tier elevated deck covering the entire length and breadth of Thane platforms.
The access to the decks would be from the Satis bridges at either sides of the station. Also, the railways plan to commercially exploit the area outside
Thane station by constructing commercial plazas at a later stage. The plan is presently at the planning stage and following approvals, it will go for tendering. — Manoj Badger
