Rs 53 lakh cash seized during liquor raid in Mahisagar village

VADODARA: A team of officials of the state monitoring cell (SMC) of the Gujarat police unearthed cash amounting to Rs 53.43 lakh during a liquor raid in a village in Mahisagar district. The team was acting on a tip off regarding bootlegging when it chanced upon the cash during a search operation.
An offence registered regarding the raid at the Lunawada police station states that SMC personnel received information regarding liquor being sold at the Viraniya village in Lunawada taluka of Mahisagar district. A team rushed to the village to conduct a raid.
The team located one Khumansinh Chauhan with Indian Made Foreign liquor (IMFL) and Rs 8,380 cash near a ravine near Viraniya village. Khumansinh claimed that the liquor was given to him by Vikramsinh Chauhan, a resident of Viraniya village, for whom he was working.
Khumansinh led the police to the residence of Vikramsinh where the team found his wife Kapila and on searching they unearthed IMFL hidden at different locations. The team also found plastic bags with currency notes of different denomination valued at Rs 53,43,030. Vikramsinh was not present at his residence during the raid.
The woman allegedly admitted that her husband sells liquor but could not tell the police from where he obtained it from. Paper slips which are suspected to be accounts of the liquor trade were also found along with the cash, which is believed to have been obtained by selling liquor.
Khumansinh told the police that he had started working for Vikramsinh around 10 days ago. He claimed that Vikramsinh used to pay him Rs 300 per day for the work. The total value of the seized liquor is estimated to be Rs 1.67 lakh.
