CHENNAI: Police have launched a hunt for a couple for cheating a doctor of 1.7 crore from his bank account by modifying the registered mobile number.
The prime suspect, Saravana Vel, 34, and his girlfriend, Janani, 30, befriended the doctor after visiting his clinic in Ashok Nagar.
The doctor, G Rajasekar, in his complaint said that he trusted them and transferred 25 lakh to invest in the stock market. The duo showed forged documents to the doctor and collected 30% commission from him in cash. As the doctor didn't pay attention to the transactions, the couple cheated him continuously and swindled cash from him. The doctor found this out after he visited his bank recently.
Based on his complaint, the Tambaram police have registered a case. Meanwhile, the couple filed an anticipatory bail before the Madras high court and the court dismissed the petition on Friday.
Inquiries revealed that Vel and Janani were involved in other similar cheating cases.
