HYDERABAD: Two women sanitation workers of Medak municipality were killed after a speeding car ran over them at a petrol bunk in the town in the early hours of Saturday. Three others, including two women working in the Indian Oil petrol bunk, suffered injuries.
Three municipal workers were on the way to their office to report for duty when the Maruti Alto ran over the trio at 5 am and two women workers of the petrol bunk. Medak police said Narasamma (43) died on the spot, while Yadamma (46) died in Medak government hospital while undergoing treatment.
While the petrol bunk workers were shifted to the government hospital, the third municipal worker was rushed to a hospital in Hyderabad after her condition turned critical.
CCTV footage of the accident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the women walking along the side of the road close to the petrol bunk when the car rams into them at great speed.
Police, however, ruled out the possibility of the car driver cruising the vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Police said the Alto driver, while approaching the petrol bunk, may have stepped on the accelerator instead of applying brakes and in the process, mowed down the five pedestrians. “Before starting their work, the sanitation workers mark their attendance at municipal office. The accident took place while they were heading to the municipal office early in the morning,” Medak deputy superintendent of police PSaidulu said.
One of the car tyres burst under the impact of crash. The car driver (33) was taken into custody and the vehicle was seized. A case was registered against him for causing death by negligence. Municipal workers staged a protest at office, demanding justice for the families of the two deceased women.
