KOLKATA: Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur will open its first international campus in
Malaysia next year, director
Virendra Kumar Tewari announced at the institute's 68th convocation on Saturday. "It will be the first global IIT by India's first IIT," Tewari said.
IIT Kharagpur was established in 1951.
The announcement comes four months after a committee set up by the Centre for the global expansion of IITs identified the UK, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Malaysia, Thailand and Tanzania as prospective locations for offshore campuses. The factors influencing the selection included levels of mutual interest and cooperation, academic heritage, potential diplomatic benefits and the suitability of the host country's ecosystem for Indian faculty and students. Each of the oldest IITs was given the mandate to expand its campus in one of the selected countries.
The Malaysia campus is likely to open in September 2023, an IIT Kharagpur offi-cial said. While the city and campus size will be disclosed later, it will mostly offer engineering courses which will be taught by a selection of senior faculty members from the Kharagpur campus.
