MUMBAI: At 16 degrees Celsius, the suburbs on Saturday recorded the season's coldest day - just one degree more than the hill station of Mahabaleshwar in Satara district. Colaba weather station recorded a minimum temperature of 18.8 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is likely to drop further to 14 degrees Celsius on Sunday, before rising slowly.
Last year, the minimum temperature dropped to 17.4 degrees Celsius on December 29. On Saturday, the suburbs were cooler than other cities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Dahanu in Palghar district on Saturday recorded a minimum temperature of 17.5 degrees Celsius. The city on Saturday was far more chilly than Kolhapur (17.4 ), and Ratnagiri (19.2).
Mumbaikars who woke up feeling the chill continued to enjoy the cool breeze with the maximum day temperature at 28.8 degrees Celsius (recorded at 2.30pm) on Saturday.
The fall in temperature has been attributed by the Indian Meteorological Department to the north-westerly winds from the Himalayas that continue to bring frigid cold over to the northwestern plains.
The fall in temperature comes days after the city experienced intense heat two weeks ago with the highest temperature touching 35.6 degrees Celsius on December 16, making Mumbai the hottest city in India on that day.
