Int’l Cultural Jamboree: Students showcase innovative projects

Mangaluru: The science fair organised as part of the International Cultural Jamboree at Alva’s Campus in Moodbidri showcased several unique projects presented by students.
From eco-friendly ways to keep pests away to smart houses, students presented several projects. Huzait Sheikh from Karkala, who presented a smart house, said that he had designed a lamp that lights up only when a person steps forward on stairs. Due to the pressure sensor installed on the stairs, the light turns on. Similarly, Praneet Moras from Belthangady unveiled a dream house, wherein doors get locked based on sound sensors. Mohammad Anas and Nishan Shetty from Moodbidri have devised a novel way of using kitchen waste water for hydroponics.
Taking note of the increasing accidents due to potholes, especially during night hours, students of Canara Engineering College have developed an app that will provide details on the quality of the road.
Meanwhile, scouts, guides, rovers and rangers got an opportunity to look into the life of the tribal community. The lives of members of the Koraga community are associated with the forest and handicrafts. Koraga families source cane and wild creepers from the forest to make items such as rice trays, ‘tadape’, ‘butti’ (baskets) and so on. “We have been engaged in weaving baskets and other accessories used in day-to-day life for generations. This has continued even today,” said Sundara from Kinnigoli.
Magicians from New Delhi and other places have been entertaining visitors. Magician Wajid Ali said that a team of 22 magicians led by Raj Kumar from Delhi had arrived. “It is a matter of pride that I got the opportunity to participate in the international jamboree," said magician Mohammed Chaman.
Several stamps released by India Post since independence have been displayed. The stamp exhibition relives the pivotal events of our freedom struggle.
