RAJKOT: A seven-year-old girl was mauled to death by a leopard in a village of Junagadh district while she was with her grandparents at a river bank.
The forest department has called a team from Sasan to capture the leopard.
According to the forest department, Mannat Rathod, a student of Class 2, went to wash clothes at a river bank with her grandparents at Sonardi village on Saturday morning.
While she was playing near her grandfather, a leopard suddenly appeared, grabbed the girl from the neck and ran away.
Her grandparents started screaming. Some villagers reached the spot and started a search for Mannat. They also informed the forest department.
The girl found in the pool of blood few kilometres away in the river belt. She was taken to Junagadh civil hospital where she was declared brought dead.
When contacted, deputy conservator of forest, Gir Somnath (social forestry division) Shobhita Agarwal told TOI that “We have called a team from Sasan and set up various cages to capture the leopard. We will continue search operation for entire night and we will catch the leopard as soon as possible. We have also initiated the process to release compensation for the victim’s family.”
