MC official visits night shelters to take stock of arrangements
Ludhiana: In order to take a stock of the arrangements made at three night shelters being operated by the municipal corporation (MC), joint commissioner Kulpreet Singh on Thursday night visited these facilities. These shelters have been made to provide for the homeless during winter.
During the inspection conducted after 9pm on Thursday night, Singh also inspected the city buses deployed to ferry the homeless from different points of the city to these three night shelters. Food is also provided at these facilities in the form of langar by Gurdwara Shaheedan Pheruman Sahib, situated near Dholewal Chowk.
These three night shelters are spread across the city — one is in Haibowal dairy complex, one near Vishwakarma Chowk, and one in Moti Nagar (near Cheema Chowk).
Two city buses have been deployed to ferry the homeless to these night shelters from Jagraon Bridge, Durga Mata Mandir, Vishwakarma Chowk, Railway Station Road, Bharat Nagar Chowk, Jalandhar bypass and other areas.
The joint commissioner said that around 10 staffers of the MC were involved in ferrying the homeless to the night shelters through city buses. Proper security arrangements had been made at the shelter facilities to avoid any untoward incident. Besides, a record of persons taking shelter in the facilities was also being kept, he informed.
He stated that though the facilities were found to be in place, the staff was directed to ensure cleanliness at the shelters.
During the visit to the shelter facility in Moti Nagar, Singh also interacted with the homeless to discuss the issues they faced at the facility. He stated that blankets were provided to the homeless at the facilities, and food was being provided by the gurdwara as langar.
He stated that surprise inspections would again be conducted to ensure that the homeless do not face any troubles at the night shelters.
Besides, many NGOs have also been supporting the homeless. Vardhman group had recently donated 100 blankets for the shelters.
