Sam Curran became the highest-paid player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday, December 23, when Punjab Kings bid a mind-boggling Rs. 18.5 crore for him at the IPL 2023 auction in Kochi.

The England all-rounder beat out Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to get the most lucrative contract in IPL history. When IPL chairman Arun Dhumal was asked why Curran was paid more than Sharma and Kohli, he had an interesting answer.

Since Sam was the best player in the T20 World Cup 2022 and took the most wickets, he helped England win the World Cup in a rout. Many people thought Curran would get a huge contract after how well he played. And he did, becoming the highest-paid player in the history of the lucrative league.

Vimal Kumar, a veteran journalist, posted a short video to his Twitter account in which he had an interesting conversation with Dhumal.

When asked about Curran, an international player, getting paid more in the IPL 2023 than top Indian players like Rohit or Virat, Dhumal said that Rohit and Virat wouldn't mind because money isn't always that important.

Later in the video, Vimal Kumar asked BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla about Curran getting the historic deal. Shukla said that it was a big deal for the Englishman.

Note that Rohit is still captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), but Virat quit as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) before the IPL 2022 season.
