Guwahati out of CCTV glare except along 10km GS Road
Guwahati: The city, which is witnessing a spurt in crimes, lacks adequate CCTV surveillance, except along the over 10-km-long GS Road.
The plan to install CCTVs at all entry and exit points of Guwahati within 45 days, which was announced by special DGP (law & order) GP Singh last month after a review meeting on the law and order scenario of Guwahati, is yet to materialise.
Police commissioner Diganta Barah on Friday said, “CCTVs have been installed at a few traffic junctions under the integrated traffic management system (ITMS). However, the project to install CCTVs covering the entire boundary of the city is currently under consideration. I hope it will be implemented soon.”
Under the ITMS, around 1,000 CCTVs were installed along with traffic signal lights at 20 out of a total of 94 traffic junctions in the city in a bid to monitor the traffic movement. It must be mentioned that the Assam Police and the Guwahati Smart City Limited had in 2019 initiated a ‘City Surveillance’ project to install 4,000 CCTV cameras at a cost of Rs 2,296 crore. But the plan was shelved later.
Guwahati, with an area of over 1500 sqkm, has three entry and exit points — Chandrapur, Khanapara and Jalukbari. All movement from upper Assam, central Assam, Barak Valley and NE states take place through Khanapara, while the movement from the entire lower Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal to Guwahati takes place through Jalukbari.
