New Delhi: A gang from Madhya Pradesh, which posed as baaratis and targeted weddings, struck again this season. However, they were caught by Delhi Police’s crime branch after they targeted six functions in a row. Two men and a child have been apprehended.
According to special commissioner (crime) Ravindra Singh Yadav, there are several such gangs that steal bags containing jewellery or cash at wedding venues.
“The kingpin of the gang lures parents of children by offering money. The gang then trains children for committing thefts. The men and women create a distraction while the children take away gifts and valuables from the stage,” he added.
Police have recovered an i10 car used by the accused to enter the venues, Rs 63,500 cash, a gold chain and a bag till now. They are looking for other members of the syndicate.
The crime branch started tracking the gang members after a number of incidents were reported where bags containing shagun jewellery and cash were stolen from wedding venues. The police team started analysing all the available CCTV and video footages of the wedding ceremonies. They also deployed informers and posed as baraatis while visiting various prominent banquet halls, farmhouses, etc, where wedding ceremonies were being held. At times, the cops had to participate in dance as well.
During such an exercise, three suspects, including one juvenile, were identified. “The gang members were well dressed to mingle with the guests. The suspects, before committing theft, spent considerable time at the venues, making themselves comfortable and familiar with the guests. They were never in a hurry, had their dinner there and patiently waited for the opportune time to strike,” special CP Yadav added.
